Chemical Chronicles

Chemicals

We all know that asbestos, mold, and lead can cause serious health risks. Being able to manage these hazardous substances is important to ensure safety and health in our living and working environments. Effectively mitigating these hazards often relies on the careful use of chemicals. Let’s talk about the critical role these chemicals play.

The Role of Chemicals in Asbestos Management

As you may know, asbestos abatement involves the removal or encapsulation of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) to prevent the release of fibers into the air. Professionals use a variety of chemicals during this process.

Encapsulants are chemicals applied to ACMs to form a protective barrier, preventing the release of fibers. Bridging Encapsulants form a layer over the surface of ACMs, locking the fibers in place.

Our PowerChem Lockdown does the job! It is formulated to lock down fibers following asbestos removal. The flexible barrier also serves a dual purpose by priming the substrate and allowing for the adhesion of secondary coatings.

Fiberlock ABC Encapsulant is also very effective. It is an asbestos sealant that encapsulates friable asbestos containing material (ACM), and provides specific asbestos abatement needs, including lockdown, removal, penetrating encapsulation and bridging encapsulation.

Wetting agents are sprayed on asbestos materials before removal to reduce dust and fiber release. These agents help keep fibers from becoming airborne during the removal process.

Our PowerChem Wet Coat prevents water from evaporating, keeping the asbestos material wetter for a longer period of time.

Sealers are applied to surfaces after removal to trap any residual fibers and prevent future contamination.

The Role of Chemicals in Mold Management

From our last blog, you learned that mold remediation involves removing mold growth and addressing moisture issues. Chemicals also play a crucial role in this process as well.

Disinfectants are used to kill the mold spores and prevent their growth. They can also create a barrier to protect surfaces from future mold growth and damage.

Mold resistant coatings can be painted on the affected area to also prevent mold growth.

The Role of Chemicals in Lead Abatement

Lead abatement aims to permanently eliminate lead-based paint hazards. Chemicals are also important when dealing with lead.
Like asbestos, encapsulants are also used in lead abatement to cover lead-based paints. They create a durable, protective coating that prevents lead particles from becoming airborne.

Our Fiberlock Lead Encapsulant is specifically prepared to seal underlying surfaces and prevent the release of lead dust and particles.

Safety

Just because these chemicals are important when dealing with asbestos, mold, and lead, it does not mean that they can’t be harmful to your health. Therefore, it is so important that you wear the necessary PPE when using these chemicals. PPE should be on anyway during abatement.
